Mickey the Monkee turns 65 today!
Drummer and sometimes lead singer of the that fab pop band - The Monkees - Mickey Dolenz had first established himself by the age of 10, when under the stage name of Mickey Braddock, he starred in his first television series, "Circus Boy," which aired on NBC from 1956-1958. Mickey's father George ,had starred in a number of films and in the mid-fifties the television series "The Count of Monte Crisco."
In his teens, Mickey guest- starred in a number of TV shows in the 50's and learned to play guitar.
In fact, he auditioned for The Monkees singing Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode."
Mickey was considered the best vocalist in the band, and even was given the lead vocals on the compositions by his fellow Monkees Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork.
Dolenz was lead singer on The Monkees' biggest hit, the Neil Diamond penned song, "I'm A Believer" which was also the best selling single of 1967.
Never given their due recognition as a good studio or live band, The Monkees place in rock & roll history deserves a much higher status and thank yous from both music critics and fans alike.
